Autonomous Drone Concept for at Risk Areas

OilPatrol is a concept of an automatic device and a work scenario in at risk areas.
The oil industries with coastal settlements are subject to continuous risk of oil pollution and are therefore considered to be at risk areas.
The result is the need for continuous monitoring, prevention and control and, in the event of an accident, the ability both to discover as soon as possible every risk of polluting that could arise, 24 hours a day, every day of the year and to quickly intervene to limit and minimize environmental damage by collecting and eliminating spilled pollutants (Safety Management).
The continuous cleaning and maintenance of the water surfaces ensures a high state of water well-being.
The innovative project «OilPatrol» responds to the direct needs of the companies and also to the indirect need to arouse a positive image of the company in the communities and establish and maintain a peaceful coexistence with neighboring populations.
The hydrocarbon cycle is larger than just by the sea.
It starts in the place where crude oil is extracted from the ground, then the crude travels to a port via a conduct, is imbarked on an oil tanker, travels to an oil terminal to be disbarked, passes through a refinery and then start another travel, via another conduct, to the final deposit.
These cues prompted us to widen the view from just the automatic drone to the whole scenario of oil processing.
At the moment we've been focused on the near scenario, from the tanker mooring in the oil terminal to the destination's deposit, and we took as sample the TalOil oil terminal in Trieste and the "Transalpino" oil pipeline from Trieste to Ingolstadt.
Every year the TalOil terminal receives more than 500 tanker for a flow of more than 40 millions tons of crude oil. This numbers make Trieste the first Mediterranean port for crude traffic.
The path is: Trieste, San Dorligo della Valle (2.030.000 m³ deposit), Reana del Rojale, Cavazzo Carnico, Paluzza, Plöckenpass, Kötschach-Mauthen, Lienz, Felber tauern (1.572 meters above sea level), Salzburg, Pass Thurn, Jochberg, Kufstein/Kiefersfelden, Rosenheim, Ingolstadt, Lenting (318.000 m³ deposit) and then a fork to Karlsruhe or Neustadt.

OilPatrol Concept

Target Idea
Full Electric. Allows the use of renewable energy from solar panels, wind turbines or waves and tides;
it is total green, it does not pollute and makes no noise;
it is easier to supply energy;
it is easier to maintain and is less prone to breakage and breakdowns.
Anti detonation trigger. Basic in areas at risk of fire and explosions.
Batteries auto-recharge. Induction with "Bombardier Primove" system.
Autonomous patrolling. With a dedicated software that integrates GPS surveys, radar detections, map and route analysis, energy checks and data transmission.
The system is developed with the University of Verona in accordance with the "IntCatch" program.
Alarm and first intervention. Thanks to the automatic analysis of the cross data coming from ultra-red and thermal cameras and ultraviolet rays installed both on the ground and on OilPatrol.
In the event of hydrocarbon spills, the system alarms all the affected terminals in the area at risk and changes its patrolling to emergency, navigating to the spill to give first remedy and damage reduction.
Cleaning and maintenance of the water surface. Thanks to the "TJP Train" installed underneath the OilPatrol.
Water healthiness data collection. In accordance with the basic need of the Safety Management and the reassurance of the neighbors they are collected the water healthiness data.
The are typically: temperature, pH, oxygen, clarity, salinity, nitrites, nitrates, phosphates, polyphosphates, heavy metal ions, pathogenic microorganisms, herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, hydrocarbons, etc.
The collected data are transferred via wifi to a cloud archive and then managed to allows storing, consultation and sorting.
The collected data give to the at risk area management the chance to show to the neighbors the care they put in act operating in the interested area.
The control units is developed in collaboration with the University of Verona and the IntCatch project.

Ability to avoid collisions
Thanks both to data analysis and triangulations coming from:
ground-mounted radars;
OilPatrol on-board radar;
GPS data from satellite systems;
transponder of third-party boats and ships;
radio transmission of data relating to itself presence, course and speed;
automatic calculation of any collision routes;
patrol interruption, fast removal from collision routes, restart of the patrol program after danger escape.

OilPatrol Employment Example

This below is the map of the Tal-Oil terminal in Trieste, the most important in the Mediterranean, which we take as an example for an assessment of cleaning, maintenance and alarm times with the use of OilPatrol.

•   The area we should clean and keep clean is around 300,000 m² while the perimeter to be patrolled in search of any presence of hydrocarbons is about 4,000 meters.
•   We could emply a pair of OilPatrol, one dedicated to cleaning and maintenance and one specifically targetted to hunt spills.
•   The time taken to cover the entire area to clean and mainten, at the speed of 2 knots, would be about 10 hours. We could say that, with 2 hours of batteries recharging, OilPatrol could patrol the entire area every 12 hours, 24 hours a day for every day of the year.
•   The outer perimeter of the area to be patrolled is about 4,000 meters and the second OilPatrol could cover it, still at the speed of 2 knots, in about 1 hour and 10 minutes.
This means that this boat, by itself, is able to give the alarm for the occurrence of a spill at the latest after 1 hour and 10 minutes from having occurred.
•   The simultaneously work of 2 OilPatrol comes to halve the alarm time, when the boats are at the antipodes of the area to be patrolled and controlled.
•   We can therefore state that the presence in the field of 2 OilPatrol guarantees the spill alarm at the latest within 1 hour of its occurrence, but, more likely, within a maximum of about 30 minutes.

This result would be achieved without the use of personnel, without breaks or interruptions, 24 hours on 24.
The alarm can be given both in offices within the risk area and to the Civil Protection, the Coast Guard and the service's managers' homes : on any day or night of the year but also at Christmas, Easter and New Year.
